Georgia Medical Cannabis Card Renewal Guide
A Georgia Medical Cannabis card is valid for five years, but physician certification is annual. These are separate requirements, so check both the expiration date on your card and the date of your last physician certification.
This guide explains the current state process, what to prepare, and which steps are handled by your physician. A physician must decide whether to certify you again. A prior certification does not guarantee a new one.
How often do Georgia medical cannabis cards need to be renewed?
The Georgia Department of Public Health says a Medical Cannabis card is valid for five years. The expiration date appears on the front of the card. When that date approaches, you must consult a physician to renew the card.
Georgia also requires annual physician certification. The state's physician guidance tells physicians to complete and submit an annual Medical Cannabis Certification and add it to the patient's medical record.
Treat these as two separate dates:
- Your annual certification date concerns continued eligibility in the registry.
- Your card expiration date concerns renewal of the state-issued card.
Do not wait for the five-year card expiration date to ask about annual certification. If you are unsure when your next certification is due, contact the physician who manages your registry entry.
What is the difference between annual certification and card renewal?
Annual certification is the physician's confirmation that you meet Georgia's registry requirements. The physician must be fully licensed, have a principal place of practice in Georgia, and have a standing doctor-patient relationship with you. Certification is based on the physician's judgment.
Card renewal happens when the state-issued card reaches its expiration date. The Georgia DPH patient guidance says you must consult your physician to renew after five years.
The annual certification keeps your registry information current between card renewals. The physical or electronic card shows that DPH has registered you or your caregiver. Neither step replaces the other.
When should you start the renewal process?
Start by reading the expiration date on the front of your card. Then check when your physician last completed your annual certification. Those two dates tell you which step is due next.
Do not rely on a reminder from a website or assume that a valid-looking card means every registry requirement is current. Contact your physician before a deadline if you need to confirm your status or required documents.
DPH says card payments must be submitted within 60 days after its payment email. If payment is not submitted in that period, DPH cancels the card request and you must contact your physician to reinstate it. Follow the current instructions in the state's email rather than an old checklist.
What should you prepare for a renewal visit?
Ask the physician's office what it needs before the visit. Georgia's current guidance requires proof of identity and Georgia residency for registry submissions. Documents must be current and show the required information.
Accepted identification can include a driver's license, state-issued ID, passport, or military ID. If the identification does not show your current Georgia address, DPH says you also need a document with your full name and street address. Examples in the state guidance include a utility bill, phone bill, or pay stub.
Prepare these items without sending health details through public email:
- Current identification.
- Proof of your current Georgia address when your ID does not show it.
- The expiration date printed on your card.
- The date of your last physician certification, if available.
- Any records the physician specifically asks you to provide through its secure process.
Your physician may need other information to make a certification decision. Follow the physician's instructions rather than sending records that were not requested.
Can you complete the physician review online?
MJCard offers online video visits with independent, Georgia-licensed physicians for adults in Georgia. If the physician certifies you, the physician files the registry paperwork. You do not file that part yourself.
A video visit does not guarantee certification. Georgia states that physicians are not required to certify a patient and that the decision is based entirely on the physician's medical judgment.
MJCard currently serves Georgia residents. The rules for medical cannabis cards differ by state, so a Georgia renewal process should not be used as a checklist for another state.
What happens after the physician submits the registry information?
DPH checks the submission for accuracy and completeness. If information is missing or requires clarification, DPH may contact you. If the information is complete, DPH sends an email with instructions for the state card process.
After the required state step is complete, DPH ships the card by UPS to the mailing address on file. A signature is required. If you use a P.O. box or do not have a secure mailing address, DPH says it will send the card to the health department location nearest your residence.
DPH advises allowing up to 10 business days after it processes the required state step for the card to arrive. Physician scheduling, registry review, and delivery are separate stages, so the complete timeline may be longer.
What if your card is lost or the information is wrong?
Contact the Georgia Medical Cannabis Program if your card is lost or if the information on it is incorrect or out of date. The DPH patient page lists the program's current contact details and card-status link.
Do not start a second application simply because a shipment is delayed. Check the card status through DPH or contact the state program for instructions.
Georgia renewal questions
Is a Georgia Medical Cannabis card valid for one year or five years?
The state-issued card is valid for five years. Physician certification is annual, so you still need to track the yearly certification requirement while the card remains valid.
Does a prior certification mean renewal is automatic?
No. The physician decides whether to certify you based on medical judgment. A previous certification or an unexpired card does not guarantee another certification.
Can MJCard file the registry paperwork for you?
If an independent physician certifies you after an MJCard video visit, the physician files the registry paperwork. You do not file that portion yourself.
How long should you allow for card delivery?
Georgia DPH says to allow up to 10 business days after it processes the required state step. That estimate does not include physician scheduling or time spent correcting an incomplete submission.

Check the dates on your card and your last physician certification before starting. Then read the current Georgia DPH instructions and start your application when you are ready for a physician review. A visit does not guarantee certification.
